West Bend Slow Cooker Review, Pros & Cons

What’s Good About It?

The West Bend slow cooker is extremely affordable for the size and performance that it provides. Many users say that their previous versions have lasted over 15 years. As a company that has been providing kitchen appliances for over 100 years, West Bend is known for great customer support during any applicable warranty-covered replacement issue. This is a great value for the busy user who needs an affordable, programmable slow cooker, and doesn’t mind the smaller handles and the griddle that is not for heavy duty use.

The slow cooker allows the user to cook meals according to the idea of “simmering” versus grilling, frying, or baking. The electrical countertop cooking device allows for cooking unattended for long periods of time, and promotes ease of cooking with minimal cleanup. It allows the user to customize their cooking experience by programming their specific schedule into the digital interface.

Is great for families who are too busy to stand over a convection oven, and provides optimal performance to cooking time ratio. It allows the user to save time during the cooking and cleaning processes, and can be used year round for a variety of recipes. The heating base design, with the slow cooker sitting on top of it, allows for easy transportability, and the ability to use the heating base as a light use griddle before beginning the unattended cooking period (or on its own).

What’s Not So Good About It?

  • The “light use” griddle will only hold about four pancakes, or a couple of slices of toast and a few sausage patties. It was not designed for a large family breakfast.
  • There are users who claim to have received a defective slow cooker from West Bend, but the company did make efforts to replace them in these incidences.
  • The lid does not fit as tightly as many other brands, and users feel as if the handles are not as thick as they should be for optimal support.
  • Also it will not adjust the temperature settings on its own after a period of time, unless the user programs it to do so.

What Are The Benefits?

The benefits of slow cooking are almost endless.

  • The West Bend in particular uses less energy and power than a standard convection oven.
  • The West Bend versatility cooker has 4 different temperature settings: Keep Warm, Lo, High, and Griddle.
  • The 5 Quart Oblong slow cooker has a range of five different heat settings. Use #1 and #2 to keep food warm. Use #2, #3 and #5 for the actual cooking of foods.
  • A roasting rack for convenience is available as a separate purchase.
  • The heating base doubles as a medium strength griddle for both, allowing easy browning of meats and other uses.
  • The pot and the grill feature a non-sticky surface which makes it very easy to clean.
  • It can be used in the stovetop and oven.
  • The unit can be stored in a refrigerator or freezer (unlike many slow cookers) and used on the stovetop/in the oven.
  • The 6 Quart versatility cooker has programmable cook settings to customize your cooking experience, and the keep warm setting immediately shuts off the power after a period of 24 hours for safety.
  • Is dishwasher safe (base and lid) for easy cleanup.
  • Is easily transportable.
  • It cooks your meals safely while you’re at work or play.
  • It can be used to cook different types of food, including meat, dips, desserts, beverages, desserts as well as soups.

The following temperature guidelines are from the West Bend website:

Those who like their food to cook safely unattended and those who do not like conventional cooking, would be the perfect buyers of this product from West Bend and for those who would be fine with smaller handles than other traditional slow cookers.

It does exactly what it is intended to do, and cooks food and beverages over a long period of time, unattended and safely. There are 745 West Bend slow cooker reviews on the popular retail site, Amazon. Of those, 70% of users rated the West Bend with 5 starts out of 5.
